The treaty was ratified by the Senate in June 1846, but for a while after that, a rather poorly defined water boundary south of Vancouver Island caused some jostling and acrimony which was brought a head by the curious episode of the “Pig War” of 1859. The events of this minor scuffle are, if nothing else, a reminder of how easily wars can be started. The area contested was the San Juan Islands, a small archipelago clustered at the southeastern heel of Vancouver Island. The islands were claimed by both sides, and a cold war of sorts existed, with neither side willing to back down. One day, a British-owned pig strayed onto an American-owned potato patch and was killed, triggering a dispute between citizens on both sides. It was then backed up by a military display and some posturing on both sides that stopped just short of shots being fired. It was agreed that the islands would remain under joint military administration until 1872, when the dispute was arbitrated in favor of the United States by Kaiser Wilhelm I, the newly coronated emperor of Germany. The British were heard to complain in the aftermath that no German monarch was likely ever to rule in favor of Great Britain, but nonetheless, the San Juan Islands passed to the United States, and that seemed to be the end of the matter.
